Tom Cruise: “Top Gun 2” To Shoot Soon Wednesday 24th May 2017

Tom Cruise is currently in Australia doing promotional rounds for “The Mummy” reboot following its premiere in Sydney on Monday night.

This morning, those rounds included an appearance on Sunrise (Australia’s equivalent of the “Today” show) where the hosts asked him if a “Top Gun” sequel is happening. Cruise confirmed that: “I’m gonna start filming it probably in the next year.”

The sequel has long been in the works with Justin Marks penning the screenplay which will be set in contemporary times and involve ‘drone technology and fifth generation fighters’ along with exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots who are being rendered obsolete.

Tony Scott had been slated to direct the film before his death in 2012. No new helmer has yet been set, but this is the first suggestion that a production date for it is now in sight.

McG No Longer Directing The “He-Man” Film Thursday 27th April 2017

First attached early last year, it now looks like “Charlie’s Angels” and “Terminator: Salvation” director McG is out of the running to direct the “Masters of the Universe” reboot at Sony Pictures.

EW has confirmed McG has departed the project and Sony is now meeting with directors to find a replacement. They also confirm that “Man of Steel” and “Batman Begins” scribe David S. Goyer is writing the screenplay for the tentpole feature based on the He-Man toyline and animated series.

Casting is also underway with numerous actors and A-list vying for key roles. That probably means Kellan Lutz is out, the “Twilight” actor tweeted last June of an ‘amazing meeting’ with McG and producer Mary Viola and McG in a later interview said he was under serious consideration. With McG gone, it’s unclear how much of a chance Lutz has now – in fact until a new director is set don’t expect any names you hear to be more than speculation.

“Masters of the Universe” opens in cinemas on December 18th 2019.

“Star Wars: Episode IX” To Film In July? Friday 7th April 2017

Both an old casting call from February and a new casting notice posted this week indicate that Colin Trevorrow’s “Star Wars: Episode IX ” is slated to begin shooting in July of this year.

My Entertainment World ran the new casting notice, and both remain unconfirmed at this point. It would fit though with the film slated to move right into Pinewood Studios in London just after the upcoming “Han Solo” spin-off film wraps. “Star Wars: Episode IX” is currently slated for 2019.

The report comes as Making Star Wars reports that Canto Bight is the name of a casino planet that will serve as the base for several scenes in Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. Justin Theroux and Benicio del Toro are said to be key to those scenes, the latter playing a character whose codename during production was ‘D.J.’.

Finally, new featurettes about “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” are out showcasing the virtual camera rig used by director Gareth Edwards to help craft shots along with a glimpse of just how many visual effects elements were added to a shot that you might not think had many.
