“Avatar” Sequel Shoot Sets Sept 25th Start Date Friday 23rd June 2017

Speaking at CineEurope in Barcelona this week, producer Jon Landau has confirmed that the four “Avatar” sequels are officially set to start filming on September 25th this year.

Years in the planning, pre-production for the four film shoot got underway in New Zealand in April. The story takes place exclusively on the planet Pandora, no Earth scenes, and Landau says:

“At the heart of any movie are the characters. One of the strengths of great scripts are always the universal and relatable themes… There’s no more relatable theme than family. At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family.

Each sequel will play as a stand-alone movie. Each movie’s story will come to its own conclusion… However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.”

Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Cliff Curtis and Oona Chaplin star in the films which James Cameron will direct.

The four films open December 18th 2020, December 17th 2021, December 20th 2024 and December 19th 2025.

Ron Howard Will Take Over “Han Solo” Thursday 22nd June 2017

Two days ago came the announcement that filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller had been let go from the untitled “Star Wars” spin-off feature about a young Han Solo. This morning comes word of his replacement – Ron Howard.

First rumoured as a frontrunner yesterday, THR this morning reported that the “Apollo 13” and “The Da Vinci Code” helmer is all set to take over the film which was three-quarters of the way through principal photography and has only three-and-a-half weeks left of main filming to go. Within an hour, an official statement arrived at StarWars.Com confirming the news.

After two years of being linked to the project, and with four-and-a-half months of shooting completed, Lord and Miller abruptly left due to creative differences between themselves, scribe Lawrence Kasdan and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy over style and tone of the new film.

The near-unprecedented late departure has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, and Howard will reportedly meet with the film’s cast to soothe a rattled set and go over a rough edit to see what the project has and still needs. Howard is a Hollywood veteran and a widely considered to be a safe choice to complete the film in a timely manner.

In a statement, Kennedy says: “We’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

A further five weeks of reshoots had already been scheduled in before Lord & Miller’s departure. Whether that will be expanded is unclear at this time. The movie is still slated for a May 25th 2018 release.

Coroner Reveals Carrie Fisher Death Report Monday 19th June 2017

A report released this Friday by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office has revealed that beloved “Star Wars” actress Carrie Fisher died from sleep apnea along with other factors.

However, her official cause of death is still listed as ‘undetermined’ and it’s not clear if a full autopsy report would be released. It does reportedly indicate a buildup of fatty tissue in her artery walls and the use of mental health drugs on a regular basis were a contributing factor.

Fisher died at age 60 on December 27th last year, four days after she suffered a medical emergency on a trans-Atlantic flight. In January the coroner listed her cause of death as cardiac arrest.

Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, died the next day.

Cruise Was In Control Of “The Mummy”? Friday 16th June 2017

In the wake of the critical and domestic box-office failure of “The Mummy” reboot, not to mention questions about the entire future of the Dark Universe initiative, a new feature article at Variety explores what happened behind-the-scenes on that film.

The piece emphasizes that the film’s star Tom Cruise, known for being a perfectionist, had “an excessive amount of control” and “exerted nearly complete creative oversight… essentially wearing all the hats and dictating even the smallest decisions on the set” according to several sources.

They say Universal contractually guaranteed Cruise control of most aspects of the project, from script approval to post-production decisions, along with a great deal of input on the film’s marketing and release strategy.

They also suggest director Alex Kurtzman struggled to adjust to the scope of the project, leaving Cruise to dictate the major action sequences, micro-manage the production and get the writers to beef up his part – reducing the equal screentime of The Mummy herself (Sofia Boutella).

Once the film was done, Cruise brought in his longtime editor Andrew Mondshein and spent time in the editing suite overseeing the cutting. Some believed that Cruise had no choice but to assert himself due to Kurtzman’s inexperience directing tentpoles.

The release of the Dark Universe trailer and photo (a photoshop job) was to try and build up buzz but online reaction proved tepid. The film cost as much as $190 million to make and more than $100 million more to market and release worldwide. The international rollout led to a $142 million opening weekend, but it remains unclear if the film will break even.
